Paw Prints Through The Years

by Jean C. Keating
art by Beverly S. Abbott

222 pages, hardback with dust jacket

8 pages of color photos, color end pages

When divorce shatters a nineteen year marriage, the author buys a show dog to have a hobby she can enjoy as a single. The resulting love affair with a bright, active little papillon leads to more and more papillons. The ensuing years are full and funny as a multitude of papillons are joined by strays and two abandoned kittens to bring entertainment and a sense of family into her life. In a testament to the power of positive thinking and the strength of belonging that animal companions provide, the author shares the joy of life enriched by laughter and love. The animal companions ease the hardships of dealing with an Alzheimer stricken parent, as well as the routine bumps of a career and retirement. Through twodecades and six generations of her canine family, the author's adventures take her from her first purebred papillon to the elegance and prestige of the Westminster Kennel Club show.

The affectionate story of sharing a life with animals enriches the philosophy of living one day at the time with hope. The authors's voice alternates with whimsical holiday letters from the dogs in which they present their perspectives on life. The author's months of dieting are reduced to humor as one of the dogs comments in a letter to friends that "it does limit the quality of handouts around here. Are they still making steak, or is chicken the only meat left in the world?"

A beautiful book for all seasons and for adults of all ages.

From "first love" to generations of "Butterfly dogs", February 22, 2005

(REAL NAME)
This book takes the author (and reader) from the end of a 19 year marriage to the "first love" of the Papillon breed ("Butterfly dogs")and through many generations of love and loss. The authors family, friends, felines and canines intertwine in everyday living, drawing you deeper into their lives that you end up laughing at crazy antics of the furry critters and crying when things go wrong. Anyone owned by a "furcritter" can relate to the happenings in this book.
I was so enthralled in the authors life that it felt as if I really "knew" her! And the end of the book had me wanting for more. I certainly hope she intends on doing a "sequel" to this heart warming book!

A dog's life through a dog's eyes, February 27, 2004
Reviewer: C. Jones (Virginia Beach, VA United States) - See all my reviews
Who says dogs and man can't communicate? Not Jean Keating, that's for sure. When a nineteen year, childless marriage ended in divorce, she began raising and showing a tiny breed of dog called a Papillon. Today she shares her life with a dozen Papillons ranging in age from a few months to fifteen years old, several rescues and two cats. The fifth generation of her show dogs appeared in a recent Westminster Kennel Club show and on Animal Planet. In Paw Prints Through The Years, Jean has woven that knowledge of showing and living with her dogs into a powerfully amusing and touching story that no pet owner or lover can resist. The voices of the dogs are heard in witty and moving Christmas letters they write to family and friends. The love of life and the dogs that share it comes through in the author's memoirs of two decades and six generations of her beloved butterfly dogs. Highly recommended: five stars and four paws UP!

Paw Prints Through The Years, February 24, 2004
Reviewer: Robert Black (Williamsburg, VA USA) - See all my reviews
This delightful, beautifully-illustrated book recounts the adventures, mishaps, tragedies and triumphs of an increasing "family" of purebred Papillons, a couple of Chihuahuas, a cat and "Mama Jean", the author. Underlying the main story is a more poignant one of the pets' gradual takeover of the household and the life of their mistress. As I read, I experienced a growing sense of enjoyment and amusement as the "Astra Gang" assumed near-human traits and drew ever-closer to each other. A must-read for dog lovers!

Wit and Wisdom, February 18, 2004
Reviewer: Ann McCulley (Williamsburg, VA USA) - See all my reviews
Paw Prints Through The Years stirs my resolve to follow my dogs' examples of enjoying each day as it comes. This book puts into words the inexpressible love and appreciation most of us feel for the pets who share our lives and captures with wit and wisdom the magic of that special animal-human bond.

Myers-Briggs will never be the same again, February 16, 2004
Reviewer: Sandy Sauder (Williamsburg, VA USA) - See all my reviews
Keating proves once again that she can mix serious subjects with the touching relationships she shares with her animal companions to present a chronicle of extraordinary candor, sensitivity, humor and warmth. I picked up this book on the way to a management conference and couldn't put it down until I finished it. I will never be able to listen to [or give] another presentation regarding Myers-Briggs personality types without secret laughter from the memory of Keating's renaming of one of the types. A thoroughly entertaining, uplifting and amusing book that educates by showing the reader how things happen without once resorting to telling.
